Essential Tips for Planning a Chicago City Hall Elopement

Planning & Tips

Planning a city hall elopement is far simpler than a traditional wedding, but there are still a few key steps and tips to ensure the day runs smoothly. Here’s how to plan your perfect Chicago City Hall elopement and make it as special as possible:

1. Secure Your Marriage License Early

You must have your marriage license at least 24 hours before your civil ceremony.

  • Timing: The license is valid for 60 days.
  • Where to Go: Visit the Cook County Clerk’s Office to apply for the license. Both partners need to be present and bring valid identification (such as a driver’s license or passport).
  • Fees: As of now, the fee for a marriage license is $60, so budget for this in advance + bring payment.

2. Book Your Ceremony Slot

While walk-ins are sometimes accepted, it’s best to schedule your ceremony appointment ahead of time to ensure availability. On the weekends, you must have a reservation. The Civil Ceremony Room at City Hall is open on weekdays, typically during regular business hours. Check the Cook County Clerk’s website for the most up-to-date scheduling information.

For weekend ceremonies, I strongly suggest booking the earliest slot, and arriving at city hall as early in the morning as possible. The line grows quickly, and to avoid waiting in line for multiple hours, arriving early will greatly help.

3. Book Your Vendors

Photographer, professional hair + makeup, + florals are all MUST HAVES.

You want to feel your very best and have a special day for your wedding. Hair and makeup artists know how to accentuate your natural beauty. They can also create hair and makeup looks that will hold through Chicago’s weather patterns.

Real florals are another must have for your wedding–whether its an elopement OR a traditional wedding. They can be personalized to add a pop of color or consist of neutrals to communicate a classic look. Is a bridal look complete without real florals? I don’t think so! (Did you know you can add a real bouquet to your elopement package with me, so I can take care of the details for you?)

3. Add Personal Touches

Just because an elopement is simple doesn’t mean it can’t be personalized.

  • Write Your Own Vows: While the vow exchange during the civil ceremony is short, you can write your own vows to exchange in private after the ceremony.
  • Bring Small Keepsakes: A special handkerchief, heirloom jewelry, or a handwritten note to exchange before the vows can add emotional significance to the day (something borrowed….)
  • Decorative Details: A small bouquet, boutonniere, or even matching outfits can bring subtle elegance to your photos and ceremony.

4. Invite Your Closest People

While elopements are typically more private, inviting a few close friends or family members can make the day even more meaningful. Just be mindful of any guest limits set by City Hall and coordinate arrival times to ensure everyone is present. City Hall ceremonies are limited to 8 guests per group.

5. Plan a Special Post-Ceremony Activity

A Chicago elopement is not complete without a celebration! Whether it’s dining at a romantic restaurant, booking a hotel suite for a mini honeymoon, taking a sail boat ride, or simply taking a walk by Lake Michigan, plan something that feels special to you.

  • Dining Options: For an upscale meal, try Ever or Oriole. If you prefer something casual, consider local favorites like Lou Malnati’s.
  • Unique Experiences: How about a private architectural boat tour to see the city’s skyline, or an evening visit to a rooftop bar like Cindy’s with sweeping views of Millennium Park?

6. Pick Your Locations

While Chicago City Hall is beautiful, I strongly suggest picking a second or third location for portraits! One of the best aspects of an elopement is that it is all about YOU! Chicago offers numerous iconic locations to utilize to create art from your wedding day! Here are some popular portrait locations that are just a few minutes walk or drive from City Hall:

  1. Chicago Board of Trade Building
  2. The Rookery Building (requires a reservation + permit)
  3. The Wrigley Building (no permit fee)
  4. Chicago Riverwalk (No permit fee or application process)
  5. The Art Institute of Chicago (Must pay admission; see the filming policies here!)
  6. Millenium Park (see the permit process here!)
  7. Chicago Cultural Center (this location is free and welcoming to photography! Here are their policies)
  8. North Avenue Beach

Some of these locations are very nearby to each other. For example, the Board of Trade and Rookery buildings are just a few minute walk from City Hall. The Wrigley Building is right next to the Chicago Riverwalk. Millenium Park, The Art Institute, and the Cultural Center are all a few steps away from each other.

7. Stay Flexible

One of the best aspects of an elopement is its simplicity, but flexibility is key. Chicago’s weather, traffic, or small unforeseen issues can arise. Build in extra time for travel and be ready to pivot if needed – it’s all part of the adventure.

8. Make Time to Relax

Eloping is a big deal! Take the time to breathe and enjoy the process. The morning of your ceremony, enjoy a leisurely breakfast or take a walk in one of Chicago’s beautiful parks. Keep the focus on you and your partner and soak in every moment.

An elopement at Chicago City Hall is more than just a ceremony; it’s a celebration of love that embraces simplicity and authenticity. With these tips, you can plan a day that’s as seamless as it is unforgettable, setting the perfect tone for your life together.
